October 2013 Block

Envelope

Tips & Hints

The block for October is called An Envelope Motif. It's 1176b in Barbara Brackman's block book. We're going to do this with assorted bright prints and an ecru-on-ecru background. Be sure your prints contrast well with the ecru-on-ecru. The October block will be 9 1/2" x 9 1/2" unfinished. You will be making two blocks for October.

This block consists of all half square triangles. Here is my favorite method for making them. For each block cut eight 3 1/4" x 3 1/4" squares from assorted bright print fabrics and ecru-on-ecru. Take a 3 1/4" x 3 1/4" square of bright print fabric and place it right sides together with an ecru-on-ecru square. Draw a light pencil line from corner to opposite corner on the ecru-on-ecru fabric. Sew a scant quarter inch seam on both sides of the line and cut apart on the pencil line. Press the seam open and trim to 2 3/4 x 2 3/4", making sure the seam goes from corner to opposite corner. You will have 16 half square triangles for each block.

Sew the half square triangles together, four to a row, following the block graphic for correct placement. Press seams open. Sew the rows together, pressing seams open. Repeat for the second block.

The block is 9 1/2" x 9 1/2" unfinished. You will be making two blocks for October. Please mail your blocks so they will be received by Patty before the end of the month.

If you have questions or comments, post a note on the Yahoo PClassic BOM Group or email Squirrel (Patty) or AzPatch (Margo).
