June 2013 Block

Weeping Willow

Tips & Hints

The block for June is a called Weeping Willow. It's a simplified version of 843 in Barbara Brackman's book. We're going to do this with a green print, a brown print and an ecru-on-ecru background. The June block will be 9 1/2" x 9 1/2" unfinished. You will be making two blocks for June.

Click here for the rotary cutting directions for the block.

The first row consists of an ecru-on-ecru 2 1/2" x 1 1/2" rectangle, a green print 2 1/2" x 1 1/2" rectangle, an ecru-on-ecru 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" square, a green print 2 1/2" x 1 1/2" rectangle and an ecru-on-ecru 2 1/2" x 1 1/2" rectangle. These are pieces A-A-B-A-A in the cutting diagram. These will get sewn end to end and pressed toward the green fabric except for the two middle seams which will get pressed toward the ecru-on-ecru. For the second row, sew an ecru-on-ecru 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" square, a green print 2 1/2" x 1 1/2" rectangle, an ecru-on-ecru 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" square, a green print 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" square, an ecru-on-ecru 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" square, a green print 2 1/2" x 1 1/2" rectangle, and an ecru-on-ecru 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" square together, again, end to end. These are pieces B-A-B-B-B-A-B in the cutting diagram. Press toward the green fabric, except the middle two seams which will get pressed away from the green. Sew these two rows together, matching the two seams in the center of the rows. The rest of the seams are offset. Press the seam toward the first row.

Next sew the 5 1/2" x 1 1/2" rectangles together side by side, alternating green and ecru-on-ecru. These are pieces D-D-D-D and D-D-D-D. Press away from the green fabric. Sew the green 4 1/2" x 1 1/2" rectangles (piece C) to the top of these pieces, pressing toward the green rectangle. Sew these two units so they are a mirror image of each other. (See block graphic above.) Sew a brown print 6 1/2" x 1 1/2" rectangle (piece F) between the two previous units and press toward the brown rectangle. Sew this to the first two rows, matching the middle two seams. Press toward the green rectangles. Sew a brown print 3 1/2" x 1 1/2" rectangle between two ecru-on-ecru 3 1/2" x 1 1/2" rectangles, end to end. These are pieces E-E-E. Press toward the brown rectangle. Sew this to the bottom of the previous unit, matching seams. Press toward the bottom row. Repeat the previous steps for the second block. See the block graphic above for correct placement.

The block is 9 1/2" x 9 1/2" unfinished. You will be making two blocks for June. Please mail your blocks so they will be received by Patty before the end of the month.
