May 2013 Block

Jacob's Ladder

Tips & Hints

The block for May is a Jacob's Ladder. We haven't done this block since February 2001 and it was a 12" block that month. We're going to do this with a large and medium floral fabric and a white-on-white background. The May block will be 9 1/2" x 9 1/2" unfinished. You will be making two blocks for May (Send in an extra one if you would like for Patty. She hasn't said which block she wants for a thank you block but I know she likes florals and she can use some pretty blocks to play with.)

Click here for the rotary cutting directions for the block. As usual you may make your half square triangles with the method you prefer. I will include the method I use to make mine.

Make four four-patch blocks, using the 2"x2" white-on-white and medium floral squares. Sew a white-on-white and a floral square right sides together. Press toward the floral fabric. Repeat. Join these two units together, with one unit flipped so the squares are going in the opposite direction. Press toward the white on white squares. This will form a small four-patch in the seam in the center of the back. Make a total of five units for each block.(See block graphic above.)

For my method of constructing a half-square triangle unit you will need 4" x 4" squares of white-on-white fabric and large floral fabric, two for each block. Draw a light pencil line on the wrong side of a white-on-white square, from corner to opposite corner. Place it right sides together with a floral square of the same size. Sew a scant quarter inch seam on each side of the line. Cut on the line and press toward the floral fabric. Trim this to 3 1/2" x 3 1/2", making sure that the seam goes through the corners. Repeat. This will make a total of four units. Repeat for each block.

Join a half-square triangle unit between two four-patch units, matching the placement in the block graphic above. A floral square is in the upper left corner, a white-on-whie square is in the upper right corner and the half-square triangle unit has the white-on-white triangle in the upper left and the floral triangle in the lower right. Press toward the four-patch units. This is the first row. Repeat for the third row. (You will rotate the third row 180 degrees.) Sew a four-patch unit between two half-square triangle units. The left half-square triangle unit will have the white-on-white triangle in the upper left corner and the floral triangle in the lower right corner. The right half-square triangle unit will have the floral triangle in the upper left corner and the white-on-white triangle in the lower right corner. The four-patch unit will have the floral square in the upper left corner and the white-on-white square in the upper right corner. Press toward the four-patch unit. (See block graphic above for correct placement.)

Join the three rows, matching seams and points. Press away from the middle row. Repeat for the second block. The block is 9 1/2" x 9 1/2" unfinished. You will be making two blocks for May (three if you're sending an extra block for Patty). Please mail your blocks so they will be received by Patty before the end of the month.
