Tips & Hints
The block for March is 1339a in Barbara Brackman's book, Dutchman's Puzzle. We're going to do this in three shades of green print fabric: dark, medium and light. The March block will be 9 1/2" x 9 1/2" unfinished. You will be making two blocks for March.
There are no cutting directions printed from EQ7 this month, because all the units are flying geese units and we'll do them the same way we did last month but with different measurements. For two blocks: cut 32 - 2 3/4" x 2 3/4" light green print squares. Cut 8 - 2 3/4" x 5" medium green rectangles and 8 - 2 3/4" x 5" dark green rectangles.
Here are the instructions for an easy flying geese unit. Place a dark green rectangle and light green square right sides together. The square will be at on end of the rectangle. Draw a light pencil line diagonally on the light greeb square. Sew along the line. Press the square back on itself to form a triangle. You may leave your unit like this or trim seam allowance to 1/4". Be careful not to trim your triangle. Repeat for the remaining 7 dark green rectangles. Repeat the previous step for the other end of the dark green print rectangles.
Repeat the previous steps with the 8 medium green rectangles and the remaining light green squares.
Join a unit with dark green fabric to a unit with medium green fabric. If you're looking at the block graphic above, we'll use the upper right hand unit as an example. The dark green unit goes on the left and the medium green unit goes on the right. Repeat 3 more times for the first block. Press toward the medium green unit. Following the block graphic above, join two of the units and two more. Press toward the dark green unit. Join these two rows to make the block. Press toward the dark green unit.
Repeat for the second block. The block is 9 1/2" x 9 1/2" unfinished. You will be making two blocks for March. Please mail your blocks so they will be received by Patty before the end of the month.
