November 2011 Block

Hayes Corner

Tips & Hints

The block for November is Hayes Corner, 1377 in Barbara Brackman's book. This block uses an autumn-themed print, a coordinating tone-on-tone print and the Moda Best Natural Swirls fabric. The blocks this year are 9 1/2" x 9 1/2" unfinished. You will be making two blocks for November. I'm trying out a new format for next year, a pdf of the cutting directions generated with Electric Quilt 7. Please click here to display the pdf file. You can also right click and save to your computer.

Make four patch units with the 2" x 2" autumn print and tone-on-tone squares. The squares in the second row of the unit are opposite of the placement of the squares in the first row of the unit. Press the seams all one way (clock-wise or counter clock-wise, with a little four patch in the middle of the back) or open. There are two four-patch units for each block. Make a half-square triangle unit with the autumn print and the tone-on-tone print, using your favorite method. The method I use is to cut squares of each fabric 4" x 4". Place them right sides together and draw a light pencil line from corner to opposite corner. Sew a scant quarter inch on each side of the line and cut on the line. Press toward the darker fabric. You will have two units, which will be enough for one block. Repeat for the second block.

Sew a 2" x 2" autumn print square to one end of a 2" x 3 1/2" swirls rectangle. Press toward the swirls rectangle. Repeat. Sew a 2" x 3" swirls rectangle to one side of a four-patch unit. The rectangle will be on the right side and the four-patch will have the autumn print squares in the upper left and lower right position. Press away from the four-patch. Sew the unit from the beginning of the paragraph to the bottom of the previous units, matching the seams. Press away from the four-patch. Repeat. With the autumn triangle in the upper right position, sew a 2" x 3 1/2" swirls rectangle to the top of the half-square triangle. Press away from the half-square triangle. Sew a 2" x 5" swirls rectangle to the side of the previous unit. Press away from the half-square triangle.

Join a four-patch unit to a half-square triangle unit. Press the seam open. See block graphic above for correct placement. Repeat for the second row. Join the two rows, matching seams. Press the seam open. Repeat for the second block. The block is 9 1/2" x 9 1/2" unfinished. You will be making two blocks for November. Please mail your blocks so they will be received by Patty before the end of the month.

If you have questions or comments, post a note on the Yahoo PClassic BOM Group or email Squirrel (Patty) or AzPatch (Margo).
