September 2011 Block

Early Bird

Tips & Hints

The block for September is 1618 in Barbara Brackman's book, Virginia Worm Fence. It's an easier version of Rail Fence. I'm calling it Early Bird, because the early worm gets the worm!! This block uses an Oriental print and the Moda Best Natural Swirls fabric. The blocks this year are 9 1/2" x 9 1/2" unfinished. You will be making two blocks for September.

Cutting directions for ONE block are below:

NumberSizeFabric
92" x 3 1/2"Oriental print
92" x 3 1/2"Natural Swirls

Sew pairs of Oriental print rectangles and Natural Swirls rectangle togethers. Right sides are together and you're stitching them together along the side. Press toward the Oriental print. You will be making a total of 9 of these units for each block. To save time, you might want to strip piece these.

For the first row, sew three of the units from the previous paragraph together. In the first square the Oriental print will be at the bottom, in the second square the Oriental print will be on the right side and in the third square at the bottom again. Press the seams towards the middle square. Make a unit just like this one for the third row. Repeat for the second block.

For the second row, sew three of the units from the first paragraph together. In the first square the Oriental print will be at the right side, in the second square the Oriental print will beat the bottom and in the third square on the right side again. Press the seams away from the middle square. Repeat for the second block.

Sew the three rows together, matching seams. Follow the placement in the block graphic above. Press the seams away from the middle row or open. (You could also carefully open the seams where the blocks meet and press all seams away from the middle seams of the units.) Repeat for the second block. The block is 9 1/2" x 9 1/2" unfinished. You will be making two blocks for September. Please mail your blocks so they will be received by Patty before the end of the month.

If you have questions or comments, post a note on the Yahoo PClassic BOM Group or email Squirrel (Patty) or AzPatch (Margo).
