Disappearing Nine Patch
Tips & Hints
This block starts out as a nine patch. Use two 1800's/Civil War reproduction type of fabrics, a dark and a medium and the Moda Natural Swirls. There is no particular color scheme this month. You could make each block from different fabrics if you like. This block will be 10 1/2 inches square, unfinished. It's not the same size as the other blocks this year, but it's easy to cut and piece. You will be making two blocks for May.
Cut eight 4" squares from each of your reproduction fabrics. Cut two 4" squares from your Moda Natural Swirls fabric. One nine patch will have the dark fabric in the corners and the medium fabric in the other positions. The Moda fabric will be in the center. The other nine patch will have the medium fabric in the corners and the dark fabric in the other positions. Press the fabrics away from the center and corner squares. After you join the rows, press the fabric away from the center row. Now cut your nine patch carefully into quarters, turn each section one quarter turn clockwise and sew the sections back together, pressing the seams open.
The block is 10 1/2" x 10 1/2" unfinished. You will be making two blocks for May. Please mail your blocks so they will be received by Patty before the end of the month.
