April 2011 Block

Crocus

Tips & Hints

Here's another block that Patty designed. This block uses the Moda Swirls Natural fabric, a large floral print, a medium floral print, a small floral print and a green print. You could also use one print that had a variety of sizes and colors of flowers, including leaves. I did that with my sample block. The blocks this year are 9 1/2" x 9 1/2" unfinished. You will be making three blocks for April, as Patty's decided she wants this for her "thank you" block.

Cutting directions for ONE block are below:

NumberSizeFabric
13 1/2" x 3 1/2"Large Floral Print
42" x 3 1/2"Medium Floral Print
22 1/2" x 2 1/2"Small Floral Print
82" x 2"Small Floral Print
42" x 2"Green Print
42" x 3 1/2"Natural Swirls
82" x 2"Natural Swirls
22 1/2" x 2 1/2"Natural Swirls

We will make flying geese units with the 2" x 3 1/2" natural swirls rectangles and the 2" x 2" small floral square. Place a square even with one end of the rectangle, right sides together. Draw a light line from one corner to the opposite corner Press the square back over itself to form a rectangle and trim the seam allowance to 1/4" inch. Repeat for the other end of the rectangle to form your flying geese unit. You will make four of these units.

Next we'll make half square triangle units. Place a 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" natural swirls and a 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" small floral square right sides together and draw a light line on the wrong side of the swirls square. Sew a scant 1/4" seams on both sides of the line and cut on the line. Press toward the floral fabric and trim to 2" x 2". Repeat with the other 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" squares for a total of four units.

Sew a 2" x 2" natural swirls square to a green print square of the same size. Press toward the natural swirls square. Repeat. Sew a flying geese unit between the previous units. Press away from the flying geese unit. The green squares will be on the outside. This is the first row. Repeat this row for the fifth row. You will rotate the fifth row 180 degrees.

Sew a 2" x 2" natural swirls square to a half square triangle unit. The small floral triangle will be in the lower right position. This will be on the right side of the row. Press toward the natural swirls square. Repeat for the left side of the row. The small floral triangle will be in the lower left position. Sew a 2" x 3 1/2" medium floral rectangle between the two previous units, matching the placement in the block graphic above. Press toward the medium floral rectangle. This is the second row. Repeat for the fourth row. You will rotate the fourth row 180 degrees.

Sew a 2" x 3 1/2" medium floral rectangle on each side of the 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" large floral square. Press away from the large floral square. Sew a flying geese unit to the other sides of the rectangles. The long side of the natural swirls triangle in the flying geese unit will be facing toward the outside of the block. Press toward the medium floral rectangles. Join the five rows, matching seams and checking your placement against the block graphic above. I find it helpful to lay out my block sections in the proper order so I will join the correct ones together. Make two more blocks.

The block is 9 1/2" x 9 1/2" unfinished. You will be making three blocks for April. Please mail your blocks so they will be received by Patty before the end of the month.
