March 2011 Block

Shamrock

Tips & Hints

Patty sent this block idea to me. This block uses the Moda Swirls Natural fabric, a medium to large green print fabric (Green Print 1) and a small overall/tone-on-tone green print fabric (Green Print 2). The blocks this year are 9 1/2" x 9 1/2" unfinished. You will be making two blocks for March.

Cutting directions for ONE block are below:

NumberSizeFabric
35" x 5"Green Print 1
15" x 5"Green Print 2
24 1/2" x 4 1/2"Natural Swirls
92" x 2"Natural Swirls

We'll make three leaf units first. Place a 2" x 2" natural swirls fabric squares on each of three corners of a 5" x 5" green print 2 square. Line them up so one corner of each matches the corners of the big square. Right sides are together. Draw a light pencil line from one corner to the opposite corner. This line will be perpendicular to the corner. Sew on the line. Repeat for the two other corners. Trim the seam allowances to 1/4". Press the small triangles out to complete the snowball corners. See graphics below. I used a green Jinny Beyer fabric fussy cut diagonally. You will have three of these units for each block.

Next we'll do the stem unit. In the same manner, place a 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" natural swirls fabric square right sides together with a 5" x 5" green print 2 square. Only one of the corners will be aligned. Draw your light pencil line and sew on the line. Trim the seam to 1/4" and press toward the green fabric. (You may notice in the picture below that I didn't press the seam correctly at first, but by the end I had the pressing corrected.) Repeat for the opposite corner. Repeat for the second block. See graphics below.

Next join two of the leaf units together. Press the seam open. Repeat for the second block. Sew a leaf unit and a stem unit together. Press the seam open. Repeat for the second block. See graphics below.

Step 10

Step 11

Join the two rows together, matching seams. Press the seam open. Repeat for the second block. Below is a picture of the back of the block, so you can see the pressing.
